I”s Edited Even More in Jump!

Okay, so I’ve ranted before about how VIZ edited one panel in the first volume of I”s., but I went out and bought it anyway. I still think I’m going to really like the series. But I was very surprised when I got the latest issue of Shounen Jump in the mail today. It turns out that they have a little I”s preview in this month’s issue. Now one of the biggest gripes I have about US Jump is that it only serializes action manga. Okay, maybe they snuck Hikaru no Go somewhere in there, but there defiantly isn’t any romance stories! After seeing the Japanese Jump magazine with Ichigo 100% in it, I really wanted to get some romances! So I thought maybe this is a huge change for VIZ and their US magazine. Maybe they’re thinking, as the Yu-Gi-Oh audience was getting older, they might be able to go more towards this mature direction. So I sat down all happy and started looking at the color pages, when a little disclaimer caught my eye…

“Some scenes in this preview have been modified from the original Japanese edition.”

Well no sh*t, we all know that they modified from the original version! But did this mean that they even modified it more? So I looked at the Jump preview and the graphic novel side by side, and oh yeah, they did some work!

The page numbers reflect those in the VIZ graphic novel, not the magazine.

  • Page 6, Panel 2: Large “Ba-bump” sound effects added to cover up a bikini clad butt.
  • Page 7, Panel 1: Large “Ba-bump” sound effects added to cover up a bikini clad butt.
  • Page 12, Panel 1: “The only reason you got to ogle those creamy thighs…” edited to “The only reason you got to ogle that…”
  • Page 12, Panel 2: “Whoa, her legs are wide open!” edited to just “Whoa!”
  • Page 15, Panel 2: Large “Ba-bump” sound effects added to cover up a bikini clad butt.
  • Page 15, Panel 4: “Just grow a pair and ask her out for tea yourself!” edited to “Just be a man and ask her out for tea yourself!”
  • Page 22, Panel 5: “Please. I’ll do a spread…” edited to “Please, I’ll do a pose…”
  • Page 22, Panel 5: Large “Ba-bump” sound effects added to cover up a swimsuit clad butt.

The changes are very puzzling to me… even though the “ba-bump”s were blocking the way, you still could make out a good deal of what they were covering. Again, like the stars from before, it’s almost as if they’re teasing you a little by this. Like some porno company saying, “You wanna see more? Buy the whole book!” Wow, who’d of thought VIZ was so naughty in their ways.

And where’s that disclaimer in the graphic novel?!? If anything, the one that says it’s been edited from the original Japanese version should go in the book! The disclaimer in the magazine should read, “Some scenes in this preview have been modified from a version of the book that has been modified the original Japanese edition.”

Well so much for VIZ going a mature direction, huh? They really don’t like that booty… it’s a damn shame. :-P

  1. Meh, I miss the old Viz that could get away with almost anything. Ya notice it was never like this before Shueisha stepped in with their partnership to get Shonen Jump in the U.S?

  2. I bet this is all just a ploy for them to make more money:

    1) People buy the book and notice it’s edited.
    2) Years later, VIZ releases I’s (probably pronounced “iss”, kinda like E’s is pronounced “ess” in the anime E’s Otherwise) Unedited.
    3) Fans buy the unedited version.
    4) VIZ gets double the green from both the edited and unedited manga sales.

See? Doesn’t that make sense? You know it does. Say it! Say it now! You won’t get out until you do. Say it. Say it! SAY IT SAY IT SAY IT SAY IT SAY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Supergals, if you didn’t notice. ^_^

  3. Actually, I think the best way to think about the title is to just say “eyes”.

    Comment by Scott — April 19, 2005 @ 2:34 pm

  4. It’s pronounced like “eyes” BTW
It’s because both of their names start with the Letter I
Could tell if you were joking…

  5. I wonder if they’ve thought this through enough. If some preteen ends up buying the graphic novel based on the preview and their parents are horrified to find it’s “raunchier” (relatively of course, but you know how these things go with some people) won’t they have opened themselves up to a major lawsuit? After all it didn’t say the preview was different from the US Graphic Novel, just the Japanese version….

What’s the rating on the graphic novel, Shonen Jump’s rated a straight T for teen.

  6. i belive you say I’s like yoi say the “i” in “ski” and then yous add an “s”
    so you say “sk-is” xD
i speak spanish, and the sound of the letters are alike n__n and in japanese (like in spanish) the “i” sounds like the english “e”
    ^-^

  7. Nope, it’s defiantly “eyes”

Right underneath the title they write アイズ, which written in Roman letters as “aizu”. You can sound that out like they do in Spanish to figure out that it sounds like the English word “eyes”.

  10. I bought the first GN and was very disappointed. I just wrote a letter to Viz and will be mailing it tomorrow.

It also explains on the first page that originally it was supposed to be pronounced as “Eyes” but everyone said it as “Ice” . So Masakazu changed it and it should be procounced as “Eye-zu” .

    Comment by Cody — April 25, 2005 @ 1:14 am

  11. Yup, Cody’s right. It’s “eyes-zu” not eyes
    yes yes, blame the Japanese
    Anyways… when’s the 2nd volume comming out >.

  12. It’s really is pointless to argue, but why not?

In English, when we say the word “eyes” we make the S sound like a Z. If we were to make it sound like an S, it would be pronounced “ice”.

And the Japanese tend to drop the “u” sound unless you’re trying to be cute like the girl from Pita Ten. So even if the title is “aizu”, when you say it out loud you’re going to drop the “u” making it “aiz”. That sounds perfectly the same to the English word “eyes”.

And the 2nd volume is coming out mid-July.

  14. There’s an OAV that is a spinoff of the main strory and an OAV that follows the manga. The latter is only 6 eps, but they’re very well done, though a lot is cut out because of the limitations on anime time compared to that of manga. I suggest everyone here takes a look at it, and I just hope they don’t screw up the manga even more, I loathe people that change pieces of art just for a few more dollars :/

  15. well the ova wasnt as great as i thought it would be.
I’ve read the manga online and i gotta say, ” ITS AWESOME!!! ”
Ive read a lot of romance/ perverted/ comedy mangas and ive gotta say that I’s is the best ever.
It has everything i wanted from a manga, super funny nonsex/ sex related jokes , characters you can fall inlove with and hate, and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
and the ending! the ending was so touching! it was so heartracing. if you havent finished reading I’s i feel for you but dont worry book 10 is coming out in nov 7.
